Ancestry

My mother and I have always thought that my father's side of the family might carry a hint of Asian ancestry. I have done genetic testing with 2 different companies, and I was disappointed when both companies reported my ancestry as 100% European. Of course, these results were provided based on comparison of my genetic material to databases that continues to grow and to be refined. I was pleasantly surprised when one of the companies recently updated my results to tell me that I am 95.76% Western European (Orcadian) and 4.24% South Asian (Pathan /Pashtun, Southeast Indian, North Indian).

I still don't think this tells the whole story of my ancestry. My father's parents were both Ukrainian, so I would expect to see some Eastern European ancestry in the mix. I have reason to think that my great, great, great grandmother (maternal) was of Dutch ancestry, but I still don't know a lot about her. I'll keep searching!

Merci! That is so cool - do you know which generation of your family came over to the States and why? I find that so fascinating!

Where did you do the genetic testing? I'd love to find out more of my heritage.

Virginia Gal-

On my dad's side, they came in the early 1900's, in the years leading up to WWI. They were escaping oppression, political foment and poverty. My grandparents came here separately, and met in the US. I know they had ties to upstate Pennsylvania.

On my mom's side, I'm not sure why (or exactly when) the earliest ancestors came over. There is a good chance that they were here at the time of the American Revolution. They may have been Dutch or German, and they started out in NY.

The rest of my mother's ancestors came in the mid-1800's. They were Scottish, Irish and English. I think they came for economic reasons. My Irish Great Grandfather was escaping oppression, as well.

All of the branches of my family (both sides) eventually ended up in Philadelphia, then moved on from there.

SAW-
I started out with Family Tree DNA, with just the mtDNA testing, and moved on from there, ending up with full genomic sequence testing and autosomal DNA. It wasn't cheap, but I really wanted to do it.

A few months back, 23 and Me ran a $99 special that pretty much covered all of the pricey territory at Family Tree DNA. I jumped on board.

23 and Me gives you information about medical DNA markers, which FTDNA avoids. Both offer the opportunity to match your DNA to potential relatives (mostly distant cousins).

Those who test with FTDNA seem to take the genetic genealogy more seriously, and, based on the message boards, seem to be more likely to accept contact with potential family members. I haven't had a whole lot of success when it comes to finding family members yet, but I'm still happy with the information I have.

I was very fortunate that my mtDNA test results at FTDNA put me into haplogroup Y. The group administrator for Y has sent personal email with information specific to my results.

A lot of the information will be refined and updated over time, which only adds to the beauty of it for me. I'm OK with keeping a balanced view of the medical aspects of my DNA, but that information could (understandably) be troubling to some people.
